Why Your Website Isn't Ranking on Google

The top reasons your website isn't ranking — and what to do about it.

No SEO Strategy

If you haven't done any SEO, your site won't rank. SEO is not optional — it's essential. Your competitors are investing in SEO, and without it, you'll be buried on page 5 where nobody looks. 75% of clicks go to the top 3 results on page 1.

If you're not on page 1, you're effectively invisible. SEO is how you get there.

Targeting the Wrong Keywords

If you're targeting keywords that are too competitive or not what your customers search for, you won't rank. Keyword research identifies the terms your customers actually use and that you have a realistic chance of ranking for. Targeting 'best plumber' is nearly impossible; targeting 'emergency plumber Stuart FL' is achievable.

Long-tail keywords (3+ words) are less competitive and convert better. Start there.

Thin or Duplicate Content

Google penalizes thin content (short, shallow pages) and duplicate content (copied from other sites). Each page should have at least 300-500 words of original, valuable content. If your pages have a paragraph of generic text, Google won't rank them.

Create in-depth, useful content that answers your customers' questions. Quality beats quantity.

Poor Technical SEO

Technical issues can prevent ranking: slow loading speed, non-mobile-friendly design, missing meta tags, broken links, poor site structure, no SSL certificate, or no XML sitemap. A technical SEO audit identifies these issues.

Even great content won't rank if your site has technical problems. Fix the foundation first.

No Backlinks

Backlinks (links from other websites to yours) are one of Google's top ranking factors. If no other site links to yours, Google sees your site as less authoritative. Building quality backlinks through content, partnerships, and local citations is essential for ranking.

Focus on quality over quantity — one link from a relevant, authoritative site is worth more than 100 low-quality links.

New Site Syndrome

New websites start with no authority. Google takes time to trust new sites. It typically takes 3-6 months for a new site to start ranking. During this period, focus on building content, getting backlinks, and optimizing your site. Patience and consistency are key.

Don't expect a new site to rank immediately. Build a strong foundation and the rankings will come.
